Instax Mini 12 vs Mini 40: Style vs Technology

Fujifilm has an odd strategy. The Mini 12 is the newest, the most technically refined. The Mini 40, released in between, looks like a camera from the 80s but hides Mini 11 internals. So why does the Mini 40 still exist? And more importantly, which one to choose when you find them at sometimes very similar prices?

Stéphanie hesitated for a long time. The Mini 40 is objectively more beautiful on a shelf. But day-to-day, it's the Mini 12 she grabs. Here's why.

Stéphanie's Choice

The Mini 12 for shooting, the Mini 40 for displaying.

When I take photos, I want the highest success rate. The Mini 12 wins at that game: its exposure is more reliable, its macro is more intuitive, and it's lighter in the bag. But I totally understand those who buy the Mini 40. Placed on a coffee table, it has a presence the Mini 12 doesn't. It's a décor object as much as a camera.

My advice: buy the Mini 12 if you take photos. Buy the Mini 40 if you want a camera with character — that also takes photos.

Instax Mini 12: Technical Finesse

The 🛒 Mini 12 → is the most accomplished version of Fujifilm's entry-level Instax range. Fujifilm fixed the Mini 11's small flaws and created a camera that's almost impossible to mess up.

What sets it apart from the Mini 40

Refined autofocus. The Mini 12's light sensor reacts faster and covers a wider range. Indoors, portraits are better exposed. Outdoors, backlit shots are better handled. Over 50 photos, you'll save 3 to 5 more than with the Mini 40.

Rotating macro ring. The ring around the lens is more intuitive than the Mini 40's push button. You switch from normal to macro mode in one gesture, with no risk of forgetting to switch back.

Weight. 30 grams less sounds light on paper, but you feel it in a pocket or handbag. The Mini 12 is more compact and less bulky.

Instax Mini 40: Vintage Charm

The 🛒 Mini 40 → is a camera apart in the range. It doesn't try to be the most modern. It tries to be the most beautiful.

The design that makes the difference

Textured black faux leather covering, chrome knobs and details, discreet embossed Fujifilm logo. The Mini 40 looks like a 70s-80s camera shrunk to pocket size. On a shelf, bedside table, or desk, it catches the eye.

The body firmness is also superior. The materials give an impression of solidity that the Mini 12's smooth plastic doesn't have. It doesn't change the photo, but it changes the experience of holding the camera.

Limits to know

Technically, the Mini 40 is a disguised Mini 11. The auto exposure is from 2020, not the improved 2023 version. The macro mode remains the push-button system. And the extra weight comes from the finish, not additional features.

If you expect the Mini 40 to deliver better photo quality than the Mini 12, you'll be disappointed. If you expect an object with soul, you'll be thrilled.

Image Quality: Identical in Theory, Slightly Different in Practice

Both cameras use the same Fujinon optics and the same Instax Mini film. In standard automatic mode, with average light, you won't tell a Mini 12 photo from a Mini 40 photo.

The difference appears in difficult conditions:

  • Dark interiors: the Mini 12 wins thanks to its finer exposure compensation
  • Backlight: the Mini 12 saves more shots
  • Macro: the Mini 12 produces more successful close-ups thanks to its more reliable rotating system

It's not a chasm. It's a margin. But if you're paying £100 for a camera, you might as well choose the one that maximises your chances.

Price and Value in 2026

ItemMini 12Mini 40
New camera~£80 / €80~£95 / €95
Film (twin pack 20)~£15 / €15~£15 / €15
Cost per shot~£0.75 / €0.75~£0.75 / €0.75
First year budget (100 shots)~£155 / €155~£170 / €170

The gap is £15-20 at purchase. Over the total cost (camera + film), it's marginal. So the choice comes down to subjective criteria: design, weight, colour.

Verdict

The Mini 12 remains our recommendation for the vast majority of buyers in 2026. It's technically more accomplished, lighter, cheaper, and offers more colour options.

The Mini 40 is not a bad purchase — far from it. It's a camera with strong visual character that will seduce retro design lovers. But you should know that what you're paying extra for is style, not performance.
