Instax Mini vs Wide: Small Format or Large Format?
At my cousin's wedding in the Dordogne last summer, there were two instant cameras on the guests' table: an Instax Mini 12 and an Instax Wide 400. By the end of the evening, the Mini photos were scattered everywhere — in pockets, stuck in the guestbook, slipped into guests' bags. The Wide photos, meanwhile, were carefully lined up on a table, admired by everyone like small works of art.
That evening perfectly summarises the choice between the two formats. The Mini is spontaneity and quantity. The Wide is impact and visual quality. Two philosophies in the same Fujifilm family.
Which Instax format to choose in 2026?
Quick answer: Choose Mini for everyday, tight budgets and spontaneity. Choose Wide for group photos, events and prints to frame. Mini costs ~£0.70 / €0.70 per shot vs ~£1.20 / €1.20 for Wide.
Stéphanie's Choice
For everyday, I'm team Mini. For important moments, I'm team Wide.
My Mini 12 lives in my bag. It comes out at the café, at the market, on walks. I don't think before shooting because the film costs almost nothing and the camera weighs nothing.
My Wide 400 sleeps in the cupboard six days out of seven. But when I take it out — for a birthday, a dinner with friends, a special day — the photos have an impact the Mini can't match. The last time was for my grandmother's 80th birthday in Perpignan. The group photo with her four children and eleven grandchildren in Wide format... it's been hanging in her hallway ever since. In Mini, the faces would have been indistinct blurs.
If you can only have one: the Mini. If you can afford both: do it.

What is the real format difference?
Quick answer: Wide offers 2.1 times more image surface than Mini. Mini favours intimacy and collection; Wide favours visual impact and detail.
Let's start with what matters most, because it's the format that should guide your choice.
The Wide format (99×62mm) offers an image surface 2.1 times larger than Mini (62×46mm). When you place them side by side, the contrast is striking.
With the Mini, photos are cute, intimate. They work like small vignettes of life — a cat on a wall, a coffee, a funny selfie. Perfect for journals, albums, photo garlands in a bedroom.
With the Wide, photos become images in their own right. Landscapes breathe, groups are identifiable without a magnifying glass, architectural details are readable. It's a format that stands on its own, that deserves to be displayed alone on a wall.
The fundamental question: do you want to collect lots of small moments, or make fewer photos but with more impact? The answer will dictate your choice.
What is the real price of film?
Quick answer: Mini film costs ~£0.65-0.80 / €0.65-0.80 per shot. Wide film costs ~£1.00-1.20 / €1.00-1.20 per shot. Over a year at 10 shots per week, the gap can reach £200 / €200.
Crucial criterion in instant photography, because every shutter press has a price. And on this ground, the Mini wins hands down.
A pack of 20 Instax Mini films: £13-16 / €13-16, that's £0.65 to £0.80 / €0.65 to €0.80 per shot. A pack of 20 Instax Wide films: £20-24 / €20-24, that's £1.00 to £1.20 / €1.00 to €1.20 per shot.
Over a year, for someone who takes 10 shots per week (moderate pace for an enthusiast), that's 520 photos. In Mini: £340-415 / €340-415 of film. In Wide: £520-625 / €520-625. The gap can reach £200 / €200 — the price of two Mini cameras.
What I observe concretely: with the Mini, I dare to shoot everything and anything. I don't think. With the Wide, every photo is more considered. You can see that as an advantage (more thoughtful photos) or a disadvantage (less spontaneity).
What portability for everyday use?
Quick answer: The Mini 12 fits in a coat pocket. The Wide 400 needs a dedicated bag. The weight difference (255g vs 612g) is decisive for spontaneous outings.
The Mini 12 with its 255g and pocket-sized dimensions is the camera you take everywhere without thinking. The Wide 400 with its 612g and considerable volume is the camera for which you take a dedicated bag.
This difference is decisive day-to-day. The Mini 12, I take it to an after-work without thinking. The Wide 400, I have to consciously decide "am I taking it today?".
When travelling, the gap widens further. The Mini 12 and four film packs take the space of a pocket book. The Wide 400 with its films is a pair of shoes less in the suitcase. And power: 2 AA batteries for the Mini, 4 for the Wide.
The Instax Mini 12: The Universal Companion
The 🛒 Instax Mini 12 → doesn't need a long introduction. It's the best-selling format in the history of instant photography, and for good reason.
Its compactness means you take it everywhere. Its affordable film means you dare to shoot everything. Its accessory ecosystem is unmatched: albums, frames, light garlands, magnets, key rings, cases... And films exist in dozens of variants: rainbow borders, floral patterns, Disney editions, Sanrio, black and white monochrome.
The "point and shoot" philosophy has its limits — no flash control, no exposure adjustment — but it guarantees a very high success rate for beginners.
The Instax Wide 400: Fujifilm's Large Format
The 🛒 Instax Wide 400 → is the only Fujifilm camera that produces Wide format photos. It's a niche product, with a radically different philosophy from the Mini.
The size is imposing — closer to an amateur DSLR than a compact. That's the price of large format. The Wide film ejection mechanism imposes these dimensions. But for some, this size gives the camera a serious side, a "real camera" look that contrasts with the pastel Minis.
The Wide 400 offers photographic control absent from the Mini 12: exposure compensation, Fill-in Flash mode (to open up shadows in backlight), tripod thread. The retractable lens has two focus positions. For a photographer who wants a minimum of control, it's appreciated.
The design is sober: black and silver, single colour. No aesthetic customisation, but reassuring solidity.
Which camera for your use?
Quick answer: Mini 12 for everyday, travel and gifts. Wide 400 for events, group photos and creative projects.
Everyday (café, walk, work): Mini 12. Compact, cheap film, you dare.
Group photos: Wide 400. Beyond five people, the Mini becomes cramped — faces are tiny. The Wide gives the necessary space.
Weddings and parties: both have their place. The Mini is discreet, photos are easily distributed. The Wide produces impressive prints for a guestbook. The ideal is to have both on the table.
Travel and hiking: Mini 12. Portability comes first, the low film cost lets you shoot freely.
Creative projects: Wide 400. The large format gives more room for composition. The tripod allows careful framing. Landscapes and still lifes take on another dimension.
Pro events: Wide 400. Large format photos have a more "premium" feel that guests will keep longer.
Which camera for your profile?
Teen or student
The Mini 12. More accessible, cheaper film, trendy colours. It's also the camera your friends will have, which makes film and accessory exchanges easier.
Amateur photographer
The Wide 400 attracts more. Exposure compensation, tripod, large format — it's a more interesting playground for someone who masters photography basics. But beware: no shutter speed or aperture control, which can frustrate the most demanding.
Traveller
The Mini 12, without hesitation. It slips into any bag, AA batteries are found everywhere in the world, and the film budget remains reasonable.
Family
Both. The Mini for everyday with children (walks, games, outings). The Wide for family reunions, birthdays, end-of-year parties. A Mini struggles to do justice to a table of ten people; the Wide captures everyone.
Event organiser
The Wide 400 with a tripod and a simple backdrop. Large format photos become memories guests will keep for years.
What is the real value for money?
Quick answer: The Mini 12 is more accessible to buy and use. But in terms of image surface per pound/euro of film, Wide is slightly better. Mini remains unbeatable for the total number of photos.
The Mini 12 is more accessible to buy (~£80 / €80 vs ~£110 / €110). But an often ignored angle: in terms of image surface per pound/euro of film, Wide is advantageous. With Wide, you get 6,138mm² of image for ~£1.10 / €1.10, or about 5,580mm² per pound/euro. With Mini, 2,852mm² for ~£0.70 / €0.70, or about 4,074mm² per pound/euro.
In other words, if image size matters to you, Wide offers more for every pound/euro of film. But if it's the total number of photos, Mini is unbeatable.
Verdict: Mini or Wide?
The 🛒 Mini 12 → remains my default choice for the vast majority of people. Reasonable purchase price, cheapest film on the market, exceptional portability, gigantic accessory ecosystem. It's the most versatile instant camera of 2026.
The 🛒 Instax Wide 400 → targets an audience that knows why they want large format. Wide photos have a visual impact the Mini can't reproduce. For events, group photos, prints to frame — nothing replaces the Wide.
The two cameras aren't in direct competition: they answer different needs. If your budget allows, having both is the best solution. Mini for everyday, Wide for special occasions.

FAQ: Instax Mini vs Wide
Are Mini and Wide films interchangeable?
No, not at all. The two formats have completely different physical dimensions and are not compatible. Each camera only accepts its film format. Mini: 86×54mm (image 62×46mm). Wide: 108×86mm (image 99×62mm). Always check before buying.
Is image quality better on the Wide?
Intrinsic quality (sharpness, colours, dynamic range) is similar — both use the same Fujifilm chemical technology. The difference is the image size. The Wide, being larger, gives an impression of better quality: details are more visible, the image is more immersive. But at equal size, the rendering is comparable.
Can you take selfies with the Wide 400?
It's possible but tricky. No front selfie mirror, minimum distance of 0.9m (you need to fully extend your arm), heavy and bulky camera at arm's length... For selfies, the Mini 12 with its mirror and 30cm minimum distance is infinitely better suited.
Are there cheap Wide films?
No third-party brands, Fujifilm is the only manufacturer. The best strategy: buy in bulk (packs of 100 films) and watch for Black Friday and Prime Day promotions, where prices drop by 15 to 25%. In bulk, you can get down to about £0.90 / €0.90 per shot.
Is Fujifilm preparing a successor to the Wide 400?
In March 2026, nothing officially announced. The Wide 400 has been in production since 2015 — it's the elder of the Instax range. Rumours mention a possible "Instax Wide Evo" hybrid digital/instant, but nothing confirmed. The current camera remains reliable and the Wide format continues to be supported by Fujifilm.
