What Is in the Box

When you unbox your Instax Mini 12, you will find:

  • The camera itself
  • Two AA batteries
  • A wrist strap
  • A user manual

Film is not included — you will need to purchase Instax Mini film separately. We recommend starting with a twin pack (20 shots).

Step 1: Insert the Batteries

Open the battery compartment on the right side of the camera (a small slide-out door). Insert two AA batteries, matching the positive (+) and negative (-) ends to the markings inside the compartment. Close the door until it clicks.

A fresh pair of AA batteries will last approximately 100 photos (10 film cartridges). If the camera struggles to turn on or the flash takes a long time to charge, it is time for new batteries.

Step 2: Load the Film

  1. Open the film compartment. Press the latch on the back of the camera and swing the door open.
  2. Insert the film cartridge. Take an Instax Mini film cartridge (the yellow-and-black plastic unit) and slide it into the compartment. Align the yellow mark on the cartridge with the yellow mark inside the camera.
  3. Close the door. Press the back cover shut until it clicks securely.
  4. Turn the camera on. Twist the lens barrel clockwise to extend the lens. The camera will automatically eject the black protective cover sheet. This is normal — discard it.
  5. Check the shot counter. The small window on the back of the camera should now display "10", indicating you have 10 shots remaining.

Important: Never open the film compartment while a cartridge is loaded. Exposing the film to light will ruin any unexposed shots.

Step 3: Turn the Camera On

To power on the Instax Mini 12, twist the lens barrel clockwise until it extends outward and clicks into position. The camera is now ready to shoot.

To turn it off, push the lens barrel back in. Always turn the camera off when not in use to conserve battery life.

Step 4: Take Your First Photo

  1. Look through the viewfinder. The small rectangular window on the top-right of the camera. Hold the camera up to your eye and frame your subject.
  2. Hold the camera steady. Use both hands for stability. Brace your elbows against your body if possible.
  3. Press the shutter button. The large, raised button on the front-right. Press it firmly. You will hear a click, then a whir as the photo ejects from the top of the camera.
  4. Take the photo. The print will slide out of the slot on top. Grab it gently by the edges.

The photo will appear pale or completely white when it first ejects. This is normal.

Step 5: Let It Develop

This is the most important step, and the one most beginners get wrong.

Do not shake the photo. Despite what you may have seen in films, shaking an Instax print does nothing to speed up development and can actually damage the chemical layers.

Shield it from direct light. For the first 30-60 seconds after ejection, keep the print face-down or cup it in your hands. Strong sunlight during the initial development can cause washed-out results.

Wait 60-90 seconds. At room temperature (around 20C), the image will fully develop within 90 seconds. In cold weather, development takes longer — up to 3-5 minutes. If it is cold, tuck the print into a warm pocket.

Using Selfie Mode

The Instax Mini 12 has a dedicated selfie mode that optimises focus for close-range self-portraits.

  1. Turn the dial on the front of the camera to the selfie icon (a person silhouette). The lens barrel will extend slightly further.
  2. Use the selfie mirror. The small circular mirror next to the lens lets you see yourself and frame the shot.
  3. Hold the camera at arm's length (approximately 35-50 cm from your face).
  4. Press the shutter. The camera adjusts focus and exposure for the closer distance automatically.

Selfie mode works well in good light. In dim conditions, the flash will fire automatically and can be quite bright at close range — angle the camera slightly to avoid harsh flash glare.

Using Close-Up Macro Mode

The Instax Mini 12 also includes a close-up macro mode for photographing objects at very short distances.

  1. Turn the dial to the flower/tulip icon.
  2. Position your subject 30-50 cm from the lens.
  3. Press the shutter.

This mode is useful for food photography, flowers, menus, handwritten notes, and small objects. Beyond 50 cm, images in macro mode will be soft — switch back to standard mode.

10 Tips for Better Instax Photos

1. Shoot in Good Light

The single biggest factor in Instax photo quality is lighting. The best results come from bright, even light — overcast daylight, shade on a sunny day, or well-lit indoor spaces.

2. Stay Within Flash Range

The built-in flash is effective up to about 2-3 metres. Beyond that, subjects will appear dark.

3. Do Not Shoot into Direct Sunlight

Pointing the camera directly at the sun or a bright window will cause severe overexposure. Position yourself so the light source is behind you or to the side.

4. Keep Your Fingers Clear

Before pressing the shutter, check that your fingers are on the grip areas, not creeping over the lens or flash.

5. Use the Viewfinder, Not Your Phone Instincts

There is no screen on the Mini 12. Bring the camera up to your eye and use the viewfinder for much better framing.

6. Account for Parallax

The viewfinder is slightly offset from the lens. At normal distances this is negligible, but for close-up shots, aim slightly lower and to the left than what you see in the viewfinder.

7. Protect the Print During Development

Keep the print face-down or shielded for the first 60 seconds. Do not leave it sitting in direct sunlight.

8. Store Film Properly

Keep unused film in a cool, dry place. Avoid extreme heat and humidity. Use before the expiry date for best results.

9. Warm Up in Cold Weather

In cold weather (below 10C), the camera may perform sluggishly and prints may develop poorly. Keep the camera inside your coat between shots.

10. Embrace Imperfection

Instant photography is not about pixel-perfect precision. The grain, the slight colour shifts, the occasional soft focus — these are features, not bugs. Enjoy the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know how many photos are left?

Check the small window on the back of the camera. It displays a number from 10 (full cartridge) down to 0 (empty). When it shows "S" or a red mark, the cartridge is empty and needs replacing.

Why did my photo come out white or very pale?

The most common causes are: the photo was exposed to bright light before it finished developing, the camera was pointed at a very bright light source, or the film is expired. In rare cases, a faulty cartridge can produce blank prints.

Can I reuse the film cartridge?

No. Each Instax Mini cartridge is single-use. Once all 10 shots are taken, remove the empty cartridge and load a new one.

Does the Instax Mini 12 have a self-timer?

No, the Mini 12 does not have a built-in timer. For timed shots, consider the Instax Mini LiPlay, which has a timer function.

What if the photo comes out too dark or too bright?

The auto exposure handles most situations well. If photos are consistently too dark, check that you are within flash range (under 3 metres) and that your finger is not covering the light sensor near the lens. If too bright, move to shade or turn your back to the sun.
