Polaroid Photo Not Developing: The Troubleshooting Guide
A Polaroid photo that comes out white, all blue, leaning red, or streaked with bands: almost always, the cause comes down to five suspects — temperature, the film itself, light, the battery and the rollers. Here's how to identify the culprit and get back to sharp photos, based on the official recommendations from Polaroid support.
First, the basics of development
A Polaroid photo isn't "finished" when it leaves the camera. It ejects white or very pale, and the image appears over 10 to 15 minutes for colour film (a little less for black and white). During all that time, the surface is still chemically active and very fragile. The three gestures that change everything:
- Protect it from light immediately — slide it face down, into a pocket or under a piece of clothing.
- Don't shake it. With current films (i-Type, 600, Go), shaking speeds nothing up and can create artefacts.
- Leave it flat, without bending it or touching the surface.
If these three rules are followed and the photo still fails, move on to the diagnosis.
Cause #1: temperature (the most common)
Polaroid is unequivocal: its films perform best between 13 and 28 °C. Outside this range, development time, colours and saturation drift unpredictably.
Below 13 °C → blue cast
In cold weather, photos come out overexposed, low in contrast, with a cyan (blue) to green cast. The solutions recommended by Polaroid:
- Let the photo develop in an inside jacket pocket, against your body.
- Keep the camera warm against you between shots, so the cartridge stays at operating temperature.
Above 28 °C → red/yellow cast
In high heat, colour photos take on a yellow to red cast. The reflexes:
- Store cartridges in the fridge before heading out (never the freezer, which crystallises the chemistry).
- Let the photo develop somewhere cooler: an air-conditioned room, an insulated bag, cool shade.
- Never leave film or the camera in a car in the sun.
Cause #2: expired or badly stored film
A Polaroid film's chemistry ages, especially when badly stored. Typical signs: washed-out colours, fog, spots, incompletely developed photos, or even an entirely "dead" cartridge.
- Check the expiry date on the box before buying.
- Store film in the fridge in its original sealed box, and let it come back to room temperature for about an hour before use.

Cause #3: light during ejection or development
The photo is extremely light-sensitive in the seconds after ejection — that's why recent Polaroid cameras have a "film shield" tongue that protects it on the way out. Two classic traps:
- Pulling the photo out too quickly and exposing it to full sun: the image is fogged before it even appears.
- Opening the film door in bright light while shots remain: the remaining frames get exposed and will come out white.
Reflex: as soon as it ejects, face down, under cover. And never open the film door mid-cartridge.
Cause #4: a weak battery
On i-Type cameras (Polaroid Now, Now+, Go), the camera's battery powers the ejection motor and the rollers. A tired battery means slow or irregular ejection, uneven spread of the chemistry — light or dark bands — and a flash that loses power, hence dark photos.
Simple fix: fully recharge the camera before a photo outing. On a vintage Polaroid 600, the power comes from the battery built into each 600 film cartridge — a camera that no longer turns on often comes back to life with a fresh cartridge.
Cause #5: dirty rollers
The rollers that eject the photo crush the chemistry pod to spread it across the whole surface. Clogged with dried residue, they create streaks, repeating marks or undeveloped patches — often in the same spot from one photo to the next.
The cleaning routine:
- Remove the film cartridge.
- Wipe the rollers with a soft, slightly damp cloth (plain water), no aggressive products.
- Turn them by hand to clean the full circumference, let them dry, then reload.

- Don't throw the remaining film in the regular bin: it contains chemical reagents. Take it to a recycling centre.
